Today was my first ballet class after the half-term break. I came to class not feeling sure about my body and how well it would adapt to the movements in class after almost two weeks of not dancing. It was really great, surprisingly. I really like the way that the teacher taught us 💜!
I like how he is a technique-focused teacher who reminded us which muscles to use and how we can join and explore the movements. My other dance lessons were more like the teachers showing some movements for us to follow. I think some of these lessons would work better for me right now, when I have more dance experience. At the same time, I don’t like how some of the teachers seem to neglect that we don’t have the muscles and flexibility in the same way that they might expect us to have. I appreciate how my current ballet teacher understands this and encourages us to develop little by little.
I like how he is being scientific, realistic, patient and gentle at the same time. He made me feel comforted and confident about my dance progress. He made me trust that I can eventually do all the movements, little by little. He also reminded us how to sense the difference and feel what posture may be more correct. He even referred to us as “dancers” once. Yes, I am by no means a professional dancer, but I do want to be a dancer, at least in this universe, my dancer’s cafe. Even though he probably does not know me, I am developing a kind of attachment to him.
My only fear about this is the fear that when I eventually have to learn ballet with other teachers, I don’t know whether I could have the same experience in the future. I did not like my dancing experiences at other studios that made me start second-guessing myself and questioning whether I can eventually be on pointe. I realise that a teacher that suits my learning style is really important.
I guess the only solution at the moment is to stay at the same dance studio until there is no longer any ballet class that suits my level and need. I am still far from it right now, so I do not have to worry about it. I might have to miss one of his classes in the end, but I really look forward to doing his improver class. I feel lucky to have a ballet instructor who is gentle and makes me feel happy and peaceful with my learning process.
I want to repeat it a few times before I move to intermediate & pointe classes.
